Man, Woman, and Sin (1927)
My Thoughts
-
I cannot believe silent movies existed actually and that I am watching this one. I think that often there is music played underneath maybe?
-
Watching this in prep of the new You Must Remember This season where this is the first thing they discuss in conversation with bisexuality and queerness
-
"There was a house in the neighborhood that knew no tenants but ghosts"
-
Surprised by these child actors ability to act physically in a way that makes sense, specifically the little orphan boy with 11 cents to his name. Also surprised by how much these children dress like adults, but I think that is maybe what makes orphan caps so funny to me, is that they are hats traditionally worn by older people but on a young lad.
-
Man discovers that sex exists because when he was small he was a poor little orphan boy with only 11 cents and now he is a poor little orphan man who does not seem to be enjoying kissing women....
-
This, in a way, feels like ones reflection on gender roles in a specific time period... i must elaborate here

-
additional thoughts after watching further: i see how this movie could have impact and thoughts about bisexuality, as the main character is both affectionate with a woman as well as the man from earlier. his affection seems similar in both of these relationships
-
I do think that movies are quite boring which is annoying
-
some of the transitions are quite well done. Can't if movie has much intention, out does a have cheating storyline which perhaps the intended "sin"
-
also conversation about money which could be added "sin"
-
"I know who she is and what she is!" a lot to unpack there
-
a lot of subtext
-
even like some music or something would help this a whole lot. Maybe this is indicative of my bad attention span that I cannot sit in silence during this movie but it is kinda dull without any verbal stimuli to emphasize emotional beats.
-
murder!
-
the black and white does wonders for mood; it really creates an eerie ass atmosphere. Most/a lot of movies are better in black and white.
-
the shadow of his mother's hand to show both sin and protection create a cool image
-
" the boy is a socialist... " as a reason he may have committed murder is funny to me. Also indicative of theme???
